The Ghost Army was a top-secret group of 1,100 GI’s from the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops who used creativity, inflatable tanks, and recorded sound effects to stage battlefield deceptions during World War II. They had been specially recruited from art schools, advertising agencies and other artistic venues. Ghost soldiers used their artistic talents and imaginations to trick the German Army.

Augmented Pixels helped visualize the inflatable M4 Sherman tank, the Ghost Army’s trademark tool of visual illusion. The 23rd Headquarters Special Troops were equipped with a few hundreds of them, bringing fear to German troops. The tanks were built from inflatable tubes and covered by a skin of neoprene. Today the a tank was visualized with a help of image recognition and augmented reality technology. By pointing camera of a mobile device at the insignia of the 23d Headquarters Special Troops exhibition visitors could see a real size tank in the yard of the Embassy.
